I'm sure everyone knows of at least two ways to prepare blackberries, so I won't provide any recipes. (Although if you melt vanilla ice cream and gently fold in the blackberries, once refrozen you have blackberry ice cream! Bruising the berries beforehand will release some of the berries' juice, and if folded in to the ice cream gently enough, this will create a raspberry ripple effect.)

Back to my point! Washing freshly picked blackberries can be a bit of a pain, as no matter how thoroughly you think you've washed them, one or two little bugs always seem to crawl out of the nooks!

Here is a tip I came across for getting bug-free berries. It's a good one!

Once picked, spread the blackberries out on a large sheet and leave for 30 minutes (this should provide adequate time for any creepy-crawlies to come to the surface).

Then sprinkle the blackberries with salt. Leave for a few minutes. (This creates a hostile environment for the bugs on the surface. It also draws moisture out of the blackberries, coaxing any remaining bugs out with it.)

After this, place the blackberries in a colander. Place the colander in a bowl and fill with water (the water should just cover the top of the blackberries). Drain the water, shaking gently. Repeat the water immersion process three times.

This should clean your blackberries!

Christmas Dinner Idea!

When I was a teenager, years and years (and years) ago, a vegan friend taught me how to make nut roast for Christmas. For years afterwards, this is what I had for Christmas dinner, and making it became a part of my Christmas Eve ritual. You can absolutely make the roast the day before, and simply reheat on the Big Day – thus eliminating any more turkey based stress!

To make this vegan nut roast, you will need –

Two or three different kinds of nuts, about a cupful each. I used to go for peanuts and cashews (primarily because I lived in North Wales, and the selection of nuts wasn't great in that part of the world). If you're feeling adventurous, you could always have two different kinds of nuts and add some pumpkins seeds to the mix. I love pumpkins...

One finely diced onion.

Chopped mushrooms (a bowlful).

Breadcrumbs (this is what will bind the mixture together, so keep adding breadcrumbs until the mixture is loaf-like, but not too runny).

Marmite (yes, yes, I know. There are those of you who hate Marmite. But in this recipe the Marmite is more of a seasoning, like anchovies in any number of Italian recipes. Give Marmite a go!)

Water or vegan vegetable stock.

Black Pepper. (You could also add some ground coriander if you wanted, or even some ground nutmeg, seeing as it's Christmas. This is only a basic recipe, don't be afraid to make it your own!)

Method –

Firstly, put a small amount of vegetable oil or rapeseed oil in a frying pan, and fry off the onions and mushrooms.

Whilst the onions and mushrooms are frying away, take your nuts, place them in a freezer bag, and whack the living daylights out of them! Once they're halfway between a powder and a rubble, set aside.

Allow your onions and mushroom to cool.

Whilst the onions and mushrooms are cooling, you could always make your breadcrumbs. (Unless you've bought breadcrumbs from the shop, in which case, take this time to have a drink!)

Once the onions and mushrooms have cooled, combine with the nuts (and pumpkin seeds if you like – but don't pulverise these!), add a big old tablespoon of Marmite, and mush together with your hands. Mush it up good!

Once this is done, add the breadcrumbs and mush that in too. At this point, the mixture will be a little dry. So, add water to the mix until it creates a slightly moist stuffing-like consistency. I always used to add plain old water, but if you can find a good vegan vegetable stock, then add some of that if you like! Season with the black pepper and any other seasoning you might fancy (the Marmite is salty though, so don't bother adding any more salt).

Put the nut roast mix into a greased loaf tin (use some more of the oil if you have no vegan margarine – Vitalite is vegan if you need a head's up!).

Then, place into an oven at 200ºC for around 20 minutes depending on your oven. You use your oven more often than I do, so trust your judgement!
They used to grow in almost every hedgerow in North Wales, and they provided us with a huge supply of apple and blackberry crumbles, jams and trifles. Of course, blackberry-picking is still an option, but now that I live in an urban area, they're not as easy to come by. Nettles are plentiful though!

Nettles grow on ground that has been disturbed, such as old building sites, pathways and even by canals. They're everywhere! The trick is however, to avoid nettles that grow beside the roadside, as they tend to be contaminated by exhaust fumes. So stick to quieter areas.

When picking nettles take a pair of marigolds, or surgical cloves, or even normal gloves – anything to protect you from the stingers! Cut the nettle-tops at an angle with a pair of scissors (cutting at an angle encourages plant growth, apparently), and store your picked nettles in a carrier bag.

Once home, wash the nettles thoroughly. Keep your gloves on whilst doing this however, as the sting will remain until the nettles come into contact with hot water.

Here are a few recipes to try once you have your foraged plants!

Nettle Soup

2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil

1 medium Onion, finely chopped

2 crushed Garlic cloves

400g Potatoes, peeled and chopped

450g Nettle tops, freshly picked

1 litre Vegetable Stock

150ml Double Cream

Nutmeg, freshly grated

Salt and Black Pepper

Begin by frying off the onions and garlic in the vegetable oil (fry the onions for a while first, so as not to overcook and burn the garlic).

Then add the potatoes and nettles and fry for a further two minutes.

Add the vegetable stock and simmer for fifteen minutes.

Add the cream toward the end of the cooking process and blend the mixture. (Alternatively, you could add some rice to the soup instead. Once cooked through and blended, the rice provides the same texture as cream, but is much, much healthier!)

Leave to cool. Once cooled, blend and reheat as needed.

Nettle and Potato Curry

60g Ghee (or you can replace with Vegetable Oil)

1 large Onion, sliced

250g Potatoes, quartered

1 teaspoon ground Cumin

2 Green Chillies, finely chopped

Half a teaspoon of Ground Ginger

125ml Water

1kg Nettles, roughly chopped

Melt the ghee in a saucepan (or heat the vegetable oil) and fry the onions until soft.

Add the potatoes, cumin, chillies, ginger and water. Cover and cook on a low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the spinach and cook for another 2 minutes.

Uncover the pan, and simmer until the water has evaporated. Replace the lid, and cook on a very low heat for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. (The water will have gone, but the oil will remain, so if you cook the mixture at a low enough heat, it won't burn to the bottom of the pan.)

Nettle Tea

Nettle

Water

Sugar to taste

Wash the nettles to ensure that they are free of insects and dirt.

Place a generous handful of the nettles into a teapot (alternatively, place nettles into a metallic tea infuser) and brew in hot water for three to five minutes.

Pour, and add sugar to taste.

Written by @AllCraftPixieThe All Craft Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11988105942619796039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3169593536474548670.post-13918043875771736582014-05-28T07:00:00.000-07:002014-11-29T10:24:08.725-08:00Birthday badges

This year, I thought I'd revive a family tradition and make some Christingles with my friend (and All Craft Blog founder) Charlotte, and her wonderful little sister, Athena.

But first, here's the back story! When my Dad was a boy (many, many centuries ago – love you, Dad!), he used to go to a Moravian chapel in Bath. He would go there with his maternal Grandmother and his Grandmother's niece, who we always called Auntie Bern. Every year during Advent, the Moravians would hold a Christingle service. The children in the congregation would make Christingles, and then once it grew dark they would light them, and hold a candle-lit procession through the church. Once the children had reached the foot of the altar, they would form a little choir and sing Christmas Carols, all in the glow of the Christingles. (The Moravians love a sing-song, and my Auntie Bern used to play the church organ!)

So this year, I thought I'd make a Christingle.

To do this, you will need – An orange, some red ribbon, a candle, a piece of tinfoil, some pins, some cocktail sticks, and some sweets – preferably, midget gems or fruit jellies. (Just a quick shout-out to all my vegetarians – most supermarkets sell vegetarian fruit jellies, whereas midget gems tend have beef gelatine in.)

For tradition's sake, I will also mention what each part of the Christingle represents as I'm going along.

Firstly, take your orange and wrap a piece of red ribbon around its circumference. Hold the ribbon in place with some pins. (Apparently, the orange represents the world, and the red ribbon is meant to signify the blood of Christ.)

Once this is done, get a responsible adult to cut a candle-sized hole in the top of the candle. (Both Athena and I handed our oranges straight to Charlotte! She's worryingly handy with a knife.) Once the hole is made, line the hole with a small piece of tinfoil. The tinfoil (or aluminium foil, if you're American) will protect the orange from melted wax and the candle's flame.

After this, stick four cocktail sticks in your orange. Place them above the ribbon, and at an equal distance from one another. You can either have the cocktail sticks pointing straight out, or you can place them at a jaunty angle. I went for the jaunty angle – pointing slightly upwards. (These cocktail sticks represent the compass points, North, South, East and West.) Then, skewer as many sweets on to the sticks as is humanly possible! (The sweets represent God's bounty.) Athena, Charlotte and I used the following method – one sweet on the cocktail stick, one sweet in our mouths. One sweet on the cocktail stick, one in our faces. Hopefully, no one will run out of sweets by employing this method!

Once that's done, take the candle and stick it in the tinfoil-lined hole! (The candle is meant to represent the light of Jesus coming into the world.) Athena later wrapped a piece of ribbon around the candle, to make it look like a candy cane. It looked beautiful!

You might have to balance your finished Christingle on a scrunched up piece of tinfoil. Or place the Christingle in a pretty decorative bowl, like Charlotte did! Once that's done, and you're certain the orange isn't going to topple beneath the weight of the sweets, you can light your Christingle as soon as it gets dark!

Food

So first of all we had alot of trouble with our cat Dexter and him being violently sick and we couldn't understand why and after many trips to the vets, we learned he has food allergies which is really common with cats, it turned out to be the cereals that they put in cat food to bulk it up and some cats find this hard to digest, this includes rice grains wheat all that kind of stuff, after alot of trial & error on putting him on different food which said they had no cereals in them we were directed by a very helpful PetsAtHome employee and Applaws dry food contains no cereals and is great as Dexter prefers it to the normal cat food.

We bought his food from Amazon for £38 it's 7.5kg which is 360 meals & we worked it out give or take we are feeding Dexter for £2 a week. And if you buy from the actual sellers website you can save even more money petshopbowl.co.uk

Also the 2kg bag of food is £15 -£16 for a bag so buying in bulk with cat food save us alot of money! Applaws also sell Dog food so go give it a look!

Grooming

Grooming is a big part of our care routine for Dexter as I am allergic to him and to make sure I don't have an asthma attack it's essential that we groom him so we have 2 combs and a brush along with anti allergy wipes which keep the pet dander down we only have to groom him once a week keeps his coat lovely and glossy stops me from having an asthma attack and the wipes are 2 packs for £4 or one for £3 from PetsAtHome 10 wipes in each packs so thats 20 weeks of allergy protection for just £4.

Treats

As we have to be super careful with what we give him he can't have any dry treats like dreamies or ANY whiskers product it doesn't leave us with much choice on how we can treat him but we found a pack of 10 treat sticks in lidl and for only 95p they are a steal, he loves them and they come in 4 flavors.

Litter

Now this may sound silly but yes there is a right kind of litter we have gone through so many types of litter and what works best with us is CatSan it is on the expensive side of the scale but it has brilliant odor control & lasts a little bit longer than the cheaper ones it also doesn't clump into a clay compound which is extremely hard to clean we tried the litter bag liners they didn't work for us as they get ripped to shreds we do however use poop bags instead of the scoop we find it cleaner and faster to dispose of the smelly stuff! and that comes in at £8.99 for a 20lt bag and lasts us upto 3 weeks. Oh I will also add that it is alot lighter than the other litter on the market so carrying it home isn't as much of an issue.(if you don't own a car)

Insurance

we are currently looking into this we haven't found one that is for us yet!

Fleas & worms

We just use the flea collars which is upto 3 months protection and as Dexter is an indoor cat it's not a big issue so we buy him a new one when his is looking abit tatty and they are £3, Worming treatment is not an issue for us as he is an indoor cat we treated him when he was a kitten but haven't needed to since, but what I will say is I don't recommend ANY Bob Martin product for fleas & worms I do however like Bob Martins litter freshener which is a low price 98p I think.

I don't know if this will be of any help to anyone but we were spending alot of money and was hard for us to get into a routine with all the sickness and trying different things out until we found the products that worked for us. If you have any money saving cat care tips I would love to hear them (:

hi! I'm theallcraftblog's little sister and recently i have been to her house. we got bored of watching films so we decided to do something creative. in the end we decided to make some hama bead stuff. we made loads of hearts and decided to make some cute little bunting out of them by sewing them together. We also made some coasters. they will probably come in a later post. Who knows?
